Question - "What does having a dream mean to you?"
Answer - "A dream is a goal glimmering in the distance; it is an inner calling which, when accomplished,
serves as the rite of passage into wisdom." Erden Eruç - Sep 17, 2004

    Progress...
    January 31, 2012 - Day 114    3.5026N,35.6020W
As of yesterday, I have Brasil to my south. My meridian line no longer runs down to Antarctica to reach land, and instead lands on the northeastern shores of South America. I am now west of the latitude of Pta do Seixas located at (S07.154,W034.793) near the port city of Joao Pessoa, which is the easternmost point of that country, and also of South America.

Cabo Calcanhar, the other cape of significance, where the Brasilian coastline turns west, is just 126 nm due NNW from Pta do Seixas. This afternoon, I passed 517 nm north of Cabo Calcanhar.

Also as of yesterday, I have established one more pair of antipodes on my human powered circumnavigation, the fifth pair to be precise. This one happened near (S03.5144,W035.0601) where I crossed my own antipodal track once more for the fifth time. The matching antipode in this last pair is located at (N03.5144,E144.9399) near Bam Island on the Bismarck Sea, just north of the main island of Papua New Guinea. For definitions and the significance of antipodes, please also see my dispatch from December 29.

I weathered a few days with long episodes of torrential rains back to back, and the last three days have been significantly more sunny with occasional refreshing rain showers. This inter-tropical convergence zone as compared to the one I had to endure for multiple weeks while on the Pacific Ocean, has been more forgiving. A trusted companion in the rain is my special notepad with plastic pages, textured just enough for me to use a pencil. While outside under the heaviest rain, I can take notes on waypoints, thoughts or events around me to commit later in my actual journal in the shelter of my cabin.

    Erden.

    CHARITY:

The 2011 tax year concluded at the end of December. Thank you for participating in our efforts to raise funds to build additional classrooms at the Mateves Secondary School in Arusha, Tanzania on the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. If you pay taxes in the United States, your contribution can be claimed as a tax-deduction. We will provide an accounting of all funds received and applied toward the Mateves cause, effective the end of 2011, sometime after my landfall.

Around-n-Over has already transferred 6,000 USD toward the Mateves cause. The team will report separately on the foundations laid, walls built... More information is available on our Projects and Score Card pages. Our Board of Directors will continue to monitor progress well into 2012.

Please remember to promote our charitable and educational projects. Your friends can contribute using the Support Us link in the left margin. If Charitable, Educational or Expedition is specified on contributions during 2012, we will allocate them according to your wishes.
