Found my container...
September 16, 2009
I arrived at Lae's NADZAB Airport on the 14th after being waved through the PNG customs in Port Moresby. Could this have been any easier?
I had been trying to reach my contact Ray Critchley at Steamships Shipping who had been so kind and helpful in February. He was the one to help with packaging my boat in a container as well. He was a true professional; it was not like him to not respond. I hoped that he was alright, and that he was simply on vacation somewhere.
From Port Moresby, I placed a call to Tarni Jones at the Lae Yacht Club. She and her husband Terry, who is the manager at Lae Yacht Club had let me use the club premises and been very forthcoming with useful advice about life in PNG. Tarni did not disappoint, telling me to look for an armored van from Guard Dog Security Services on arrival at the NADZAB Airport. "They will have your name on their list," she'd say.
After we landed at the airport, we walked on the tarmac to a crowded waiting room. There was a stiff easterly breeze coming up the Markham River valley. One wall of the room was missing where the baggage would be dropped. There was not a conveyor belt, and passengers had a hard time seeing what luggage was in the stack. I made a neat pile of all of my numerous duffles and suitcases, then walked out to see a uniformed man holding up a printed sheet by the door with my name and that of Tarni's.
The van took me straight to the Yacht Club where I placed another call to Tarni to thank her, and to ask her advice on which hotel to book a stay. The club's assistant manager made the hotel reservation and I was offered a ride to the hotel by the New Zealanders Jocie and Robert Valder, members of the Yacht Club. It did not take long before Joycie had decided that there was no reason for me to stay at a hotel. Off we went to their home with all of my luggage which is where I am posting my dispatch now.
Today we will get into the container which has my boat inside. Steamships Shipping located that yesterday in a nearby container yard, and confirmed to me that Ray was on vacation in Brisbane with his family. I will pick up my satellite phone from inside, and Mountain House freeze dried food packets. Then I will take a passenger boat to Finsch Harbor to look for my friends Philip and Christian who will walk with me to Lae.
