First Hand Cartography

January 6, 2006

We have noticed whilst analysing our satellite maps that there appears to be a discrepancy between the latitude and longitude lines on the maps and the latitude and longitude numbers we get from our GPS equipment. In order to investigate this problem we have identified places on the maps are recognizable from the ground. Today we drove approximately 20 miles to GPS a couple of the most southerly places that we have visited. We were lucky enough with the weather to have some spectacular views of the mountains on the other side of the Marsh Glacier.

When we got back to camp we found at that a Twin Otter from McMurdo was coming to bring us a resupply and at the same time take two loads of equipment over to Beardmore, our staging post for our pull-out back to McMurdo. I was very excited when we got the resupply as I had several boxes from family and friends. These consisted of some great things including candy, Pringles, cookies, books and movies. I would like to thank everyone who sent me a box or card, I really appreciate them.
