Urdokas to Korophong
25 Jul, 04 - 09:02
Urdokas is the halfway point on the trek to and from K2 base camp. Rory and I departed from Urdokas at 7:00 AM and walked to the snout of the Boltoro glacier. The routefinding was often entertaining as many of the footpaths ended abruptly. We hiked off of the glacier and into lovely Paiyu. 'Paiyu' is the Balti word for salt. The lovely oasis is the first place you reach the trees. The weather was splitter on Saturday. I can't help but wonder who is getting into position for the summit. It is difficult to tell what the winds are doing up high. This morning the trekking group we joined left Paiyu at 6:00 AM. The heat is increasing as we descend in altitude. I wonder how hot it is in Islamabad if we are roasting at 11,000 ft. The rivers are much higher than seven weeks ago. I guess that is how those five porters drowned last month. We made it to Jhula by 10:20 AM and stopped for a water break. The next leg brought us to Korophong. Korophong is another oasis that offers trees for shade. The oasis is fed by the Biafo glacier runoff. There is a strong wind blowing fine sand. Tomorrow we have a three hour walk out to Askole and a six hour jeep ride back to Skardu. We have had two nice days of weather and it is got me curious as to weather anybody can convert it into a successful summit bid of K2. I hate to second guess my decision to leave. My decision to leave still feels right. I believe tomorrow will be day sixty-two since I left Seattle.

If you like 'The Who' throw on the 'Who's Next' album. Who's Next is the attitude I think K2 has displayed historically. It seems these mountains do not want to be summit
