Pulling
sleds on an Antarctica expedition, we had to transmit pictures over the
Orbcomm satellite system.
Because the size of a pic was limited to below 4k, we had tested
several software options for picture Web-optimizing prior to departure.
The Adobe Image Ready standard application
turned out to be the best (bundles with Photoshop 6.0). Although
it's optimal to work the pic in Image
Ready, you could also do it in Photoshop
and "save for web".
Conduits Pocket Artist is the best program for PDAs. It's a
versatile mini-version of Photoshop.
Crop your pics to highlight interesting parts and resize them to a small format.
Decide on a set size already before the expedition.
Below are examples of picture sizes.
The first image size will transmit well over all sat phone systems. The
second image size is the recommended maximum for very slow connections like Iridium.
Although you
technically can do up to 100 kb, it will take more than 10 min to transfer.
The third size will prove no problem for a 9.8 kb/s transfer speed (Thuraya, Globalstar) and
those systems will even take files up to 500 kb.
