Regional BGAN - High Speed Data

Inmarsat's RBGAN was introduced in early 2003 and astonished the entire
adventure community. 144 kb/s at a price of a handset! And at a weight
of only 1.5 kg!
Inmarsat employs Thuraya satellites. The high-speed data transfer allows for
seamless Web browsing and transfers of short, broadcast-quality videos. Connects to
a PDA or laptop via
Bluetooth,
Ethernet or USB.
The RBGAN is always on, but you pay for transferred megabytes only.
The cost of transfer is much lower
than that of a handset, making the RBGAN a perfect Base Camp solution for expeditions
with frequent updates of images and text.
A low estimate for an expedition with daily internet updates is a
transfer of 200kb of data per day. For a duration of 60 days, the Sat phone
bill would consequently run at approximately $1,500 using an Iridium; $500
using a Thuraya, but less than $100 with a RBGAN.
