First ever LIVE VIDEO from South Pole expedition
21:59 p.m. EST Jan 16, 2004
Do you remember the out of this world pics from Mars the other day? Sent chills down our spine. But guess what, while we watched the first live pics from Mars - no one had yet sent live video from an Antarctica expedition right here on earth. Well Mark Turner changed that today. The guys are currently in their tents and you can watch what they are up to! Just click the video.
With this ExplorersWeb has completed a mission we set out on a few years back - to bring extreme adventure live into the homes of our supporting arm chair warriors. We had the first WiFi (802,11) live pics from high camps on Everest in 1999, the first live dispatches and pictures from Antarctica and then the Arctic in 2001/2002, followed by a first video from the Arctic 2003 and, today - the final piece in the puzzle - the first video from Antarctica.
All transmissions have been made by the Contact 2.0 expedition software. In addition, some spectacular video was made with the same system from Everest high camps this past spring, among them a near live clip from the worst storm on Everest in ten years. The dispatches, images and video clips are all transmitted straight from the camps to the web - without a webmaster.
We challenged Mark Turner a few days back to give the Antarctica video a shot, and today he delivered. It's a good year this far for the expedition. Mike Thornewill, Fiona’s husband, leads this group of skiers on a South Pole trip that started from 87 degrees. Fiona recently skied solo and unsupported to the South Pole becoming the fastest to do so in 42 days.
