Setting sail
5 February 2006
We are underway! Port, Aft, Starboard, these are a few of the terms we have been learning today as novice sailors. Everyone is getting settled in and the buzz in the air from finally being underway is palpable. Today started in a light drizzle but as we motored out of Usuhaia’s harbor, Neptune smiled on our journey, and the sun came out, and the seas stayed calm. So calm in fact that the Evohe’s crew (that’s the name of our vessel), said they were surprised. This leads me to believe we are in for a few surprises later on the seagoing portion of our voyage! We are currently motoring down the Beagle channel on our way to the Open Ocean. We should hit the open seas by nightfall, then the true crossing of the Drake passage begins!
For a bunch of climbers we are all trying to get our sea legs under us, but with a wonderful lunch of roast chicken and salad under our belts, and no one getting sea sick yet, life is pretty good!
So stay tuned to see how our 1st night rolling along the big blue goes!
Till then, avast, shiver me timber’s Matey’s! (always wanted to say that!)
Luis and crew.
