TV, News, Awards and brief update
February 4, 2013
I am now in Sydney, Australia for a while where I joined Nancy. This is a city with excellent public transportation that is sunny with a steady sea breeze, quite an improvement over Seattle’s gloomy grey skies. "Strailians" here, called Sydneysiders, have the matching easy going attitude. Their friendly approachable demeanor had won my heart when my journey passed through this country in 2010. They have not changed a bit in that regard!!!
It has been a while since I provided any significant updates and I think you would like the below:
(A) Television: If you are living in the Pacific Northwest, please tune into the Evening Magazine program. King5 TV channel will air a story about my journey on Tuesday the Feb 5th at 7pm. Evening Magazine runs at different times and channels after the first airing, so you may have to look it up if you miss tomorrow's showing. Here is a 4 minute version that King5 posted online. Please pass on the word.
(B) Print: The February issue of Outside Magazine, now on the newsstands, has a 9-page feature article about my journey. Please get a copy and tell your friends; I think you will enjoy reading it. Here is an online mention by their editor Jonah Ogles, where they used a picture from my Göran-style bicycle ride through British Columbia and Yukon to climb Denali in Alaska in 2003. (Feb 13 update -- the article is online)
(C) Award: The Explorers Club selected seven individuals this year to honor for their work. On March 16 during the 2013 Explorers Club Annual Dinner, I will receive the 2013 Citation of Merit. The eloquent spokesperson for science and space, Neil deGrasse Tyson will be the keynote speaker. The word on the street is that all moonwalkers will be in the audience. The awardees will include James Cameron and John Glenn.
(D) Award: ExplorersWeb with their tagline "the pioneer’s checkpoint" is a subscription clearinghouse for worthy expedition news from around the world. They have kept an eye on my journey over the years and already included me twice in their Best of ExplorersWeb lineup in 2008 and 2010, with a special mention in 2011. They use the words Courage, Determination, Persistence, Self-Reliance, Ingenuity, Pioneering, Idealism, Comradeship, Compassion, Respect towards competition and Honesty in describing their awardees. Given the breadth of expeditions worldwide, that they chose to list the completion of my circumnavigation among the Best of ExWeb 2012 for which only six qualified, is humbling. ExplorersWeb noted:
"They were strong, brave and broke new frontiers. More importantly, they showed heart and sportsmanship. In 2012 six expeditions made waves at ExplorersWeb. This countdown serves to remember them." (E) I will announce various Guinness World Records after they are registered.
More to follow...
